Rothenburg Imperial City Festival

Rothenburg's Reichsstadt-Festtage turns the walled old town into a multi-era living-history stage for a weekend, spanning a medieval core through Thirty Years'-War-era troops to later historical groups, all marking the city's centuries as a Free Imperial City. More than a thousand participants from historical societies set up camps around the Festwiese and Kummereck and near the Rödertor, with craft demonstrations, music and street theatre running through the lanes. The signature moment is a Friday-evening torch-lit procession from the Doppelbrücke to the Marktplatz, closing with a fire-and-light show at the Rathaus.

Rothenburg ob der Tauber has its own railway station (regional trains via Würzburg or Ansbach, changing at Steinach), within easy walking distance of the old town. Cars are restricted inside the walls under a nightly driving ban (19:00-06:00), tightened further during the festival; short-walk parking is available just outside. Admission to the festival itself is free. No dedicated festival shuttle was found; detailed hour-by-hour opening times for 2026 had not been published at time of writing.
