About

One of Kyoto's three great festivals, the Aoi Festival re-creates a Heian-era imperial rite with a procession of some 500 participants in aristocratic dress, ox-drawn carriages and mounted retainers, travelling from the Kyoto Imperial Palace to the Shimogamo and Kamigamo shrines. Its roots are traced to a sixth-century rite and it is referenced in classical works including The Tale of Genji.
