Hall in Tirol Historical Bonfire Festival
Known locally as Haller Freudenfeuer
About
A historical festival on Hall in Tirol's Upper Town Square recreating civic 'Freudenfeuer' (joy-fires) once mandated for special occasions around the year 1500. Costumed groups live in reconstructed period camps, with a market, music, dancing, sword and archery displays, and a crossbow-shooting contest in which Landsknecht mercenary reenactors compete for a marksman's chain, culminating in the ceremonial lighting of a bonfire in a wooden barrel on the town square. Organised by the city of Hall in Tirol.
Getting there
The festival takes place in Hall in Tirol's old town, centred on the Upper Town Square (Oberer Stadtplatz), with a period tent camp in the Stiftsgarten. Activities start at 10:00 on each day, 2-4 October, and the tent camp is open 10:00-22:00. The organiser's page gives no entry price, so check with the city marketing office (info@hall-in-tirol.at, +43 5223 45544-35) before travelling. It also gives no parking or public-transport details, so plan the journey with the VVT connection search.
