Battle of Camp Wildcat Reenactment

Confederate troops from Tennessee attack the Union base camp at Camp Wildcat in a reenactment staged on the battlefield itself, at the foot of Wildcat Mountain in northern Laurel County. The engagement of 21 October 1861 was among the first Union victories of the Civil War and the second time troops met in Kentucky, and the site is now protected by the Camp Wildcat Preservation Foundation. The Laurel Home Guards run the weekend, which opens with a Friday school day drawing some 800 to 1,400 children before the public battles at the weekend.

Free to attend, with donations welcomed. The battlefield is at 475 Hazel Patch Road, East Bernstadt, Kentucky, at the foot of Wildcat Mountain. Southbound on I-75, take exit 49, follow KY-909 for half a mile, turn right onto US-25 South, then after about three quarters of a mile turn left onto Hazel Patch Road. Northbound, take exit 41 and follow US-25 North for 8.8 miles to Hazel Patch Road on the right. Camps open to the public at 10:00 on Saturday and Sunday and close to the public at 17:00 on Saturday. The organiser does not state parking arrangements, shuttles or a public-visit end time for Sunday.
